DINTER FINE ART and THE EMERALD TABLET are pleased
to present a program of artists films selected and organized by Ingrid
Dinter.
In the spirit of previous versions of “Bohemian
Nights” this selection of films reflects a sensibility loosely relating to the
influence of “Beat” literature, philosophy, and lifestyle.
Most of the artists presented here live and work in
New York City, and represent different generations of creative
individuals. Some of the artists
have deep associations with San Francisco, such as Gerd Stern (interview with
Huey Newton, 1970’s), Tom Marioni (studio visit) and Dianne Blell (recreation
of a performance in San Francisco, mid-1970’s), as well as Elizabeth Lennard
(Berkeley Girls, 1970’s). Others
have a more literary take on visual poetry: Jack Davidson (“beat” abstraction),
Luigi Colarullo (concrete poetry). There are lyrical moving pictures by Judith Hudson (a reinterpretation of
Bizet’s “Carmen”), Carrie Elston Tunick (mysterious fireworks and heartbeats),
Egan Frantz (revisiting Monica Vitti), and Maguerite Van Cook (sounding
divine). Melissa Kretschmer takes
us on a tour, in modest fashion, of land art from the 70’s, recreated on the
kitchen table (“Spiral Gritty”). Liza Bear brings us up to date with current events, documenting an
Occupy Wall Street event which took place in January 2012; and Dan Asher signs
us off with a wistful “lullaby” ...
“In keeping with the Bohemian spirit, art making on
a limited budget continues to thrive.
Long known for staying up late and burning midnight
oil, creative people heed the muses call to Bohemia—like moths drawn to a
flame. In loose configurations of
unconventional lifestyles and the company of like-minded people, Bohemians
continue to wander the world freely—like the Gypsies they are said to
resemble.
‘...there are no roads in Bohemia...’ they say,
‘...one must choose and find ones own path...’.
We are invited to join these artists on their
creative travels.”
