LAURA J GERLACH
Born in
Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
Lives
and works in Frankfurt, Paris, New York.
Profile
Laura J
Gerlach is a photographer, artist, and author of photo books and essays. Her work is strongly documentary and
objective and yet evinces a distinctive artistic originality. The themes and motifs of her projects
always revolve around questions of space and atmosphere and their significance
for and effects on the individual within that space. Psychological and social aspects play a role in the creative
process, as do subtle atmospheric elements, the effects of lighting, the
dimensions of a space and the impressions it evokes.
Even her
“simple” portraits include the space around the portrait subject, although this
surrounding space may be invisible in the photograph itself. What is seen in Laura’s work is the
beauty of the atmosphere of a space, the beauty of the small detail that tells
a whole story or indicates a part of the psychological portrait of the person
related to this special detail or accessory. Laura’s pictures are highly aesthetic and never merely
decorative. The longer one looks
at them, the more will appear before the mind’s eye.
